Troubleshooting:

QuoteTracker does not provide the data.  The data comes from the sites you select for Quotes, Indices, News, Historical Charts and other sources, such as Level II, Backfill, Research, etc.
QuoteTracker uses some Microsoft Internet Explorer components to communicate over the internet net and to display some of the information.  You have to have version 4 or higher (latest is highly recommended) installed on your computer.  You can get it from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie.  If you prefer to use a different browser, you are free to do so.  Internet Explorer has to be installed, but it does not need to be the default browser and it does not have to be running for QuoteTracker to work.
If it works fine at the site directly, using Internet Explorer as your browser, the first thing to try is to check the Use Microsoft Internet Explorer Settings box on the Proxy Settings screen.

Although, not comprehensive, the following can be used as a general checklist guideline if things are not working as they should:

If you are using a refresh type site, right click on the refresh (auto/manual) box or select Fetched Pages from the File menu to view the last fetched screen from the site.
Check the active times for the quote site and/or Indices
Make sure the  Time and all the Timing Preferences are correct.
If the site requires the use of cookies, make sure cookies are set to enabled in IE.
Check your Proxy settings, if applicable,
If you are using a firewall program, make sure the version of QuoteTracker program (STOCKS.EXE) that you are currently using has been given full access/permission through the firewall,  A sure sign that the firewall (or proxy server) is blocking access is if you get "Error ... Cannot continue" message when running Webupdate from the Options Menu.
For News, make sure the Check for News box is checked (enabled) and that all other news settings are properly set.
Verify that your login information, if needed, is correct.
Check to see if the selected site requires a special setup or installation - http://www.quotetracker.com/help.
Not all sites may support all ticker symbols, such as Options , Mutual Funds or OTC-BB.
Some sites may require a special format to enter certain ticker symbols.
The site configuration file(s) may have changed. Try WebUpdate.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ):

What exactly does QuoteTracker do?

Please see the What is QuoteTracker section.

What is the advantage of using QuoteTracker over just going to the Web sites?

There are lots of Web sites out there that give you stock quotes - some real-time, more delayed.  Some even allow you to enter your own stock portfolios.  The problem is, each has a different way of editing the portfolios and you have to enter and maintain your portfolios on each site.  QuoteTracker does this job for you all in an easy to use interface.

If I use a brokerage account as a source for quotes, is my password secure?

Yes.  QuoteTracker uses the same encryption (SSL) to communicate with the brokerage site as do the regular browsers such as Netscape and Microsoft Internet Explorer.  In fact, QuoteTracker uses the same components for TCP/IP communication as Microsoft Internet Explorer, including 128 bit encryption, if enabled in IE.  If you check the Save Password check box, your password is stored on your hard drive in an encrypted form so even if someone finds it, they will not be able to read it.  QuoteTracker only uses the password to login to the requested site. The password is never transmitted to any other site.  It is the same as if you went to the site and logged in with your browser directly.  This can be easily verified by using proxy logging or packet sniffer software to monitor the TCP/IP transmissions.  For additional security, see File Security.

I thought QuoteTracker was free, but there is a registration fee.  Is it free or not?

QuoteTracker is supported by advertisements.  It is fully functional as is.  Registration of the program to remove the ads and the other registration features is optional.  If you would like to remove the ads from the main screen, you can do so by registering the program. See the Registering QuoteTracker section for more details.  Note that QuoteTracker is free and fully registered for all funded TD AMERITRADE accounts and adds these additional features:

Doubles the intraday chart backfill days on indices and equity symbols to 20.
Streaming option chains.
Most Actives list.
Advanced EOD Screener (unlimited).

Integrated ART® chart technical indicators from TradersCoach (pay service).
Trading Robot from Trade-Ideas (pay service).

Which site can I use for FREE Real-Time quotes?

If you have an account with one of the sites listed in the QuoteTracker SITE drop down list, you can select that site and enter the login info when prompted.  All brokers on our list provide real-time quotes for free to their clients. If you do not have a brokerage account with one of the sites, look for sites with "...(FREE w/Registration)" or "...(registration NOT Needed) in the SITE list for the exchanges you are interested in.

QuoteTracker also supports a number of reasonably priced subscription data feeds. Check the Quote Sources link on our website (http://www.quotetracker.com/qsources.shtml) for more details and for the sites that we recommend.

What if the website from which you're getting data changes its format?

These sites change formats frequently. That is why we made the program as flexible as possible in interpreting data from the sites.  If we notice (or we're notified by you) that a site changed its format to the point of QuoteTracker failing to interpret its data, we will change the site's Site Definition File and place it on our Web site. Every user of QuoteTracker will then be able to get the update file using our WebUpdate feature available from the Options Menu on the main screen.

The site I use for quotes is not in the site  list. How can I connect to it?

Contact us with the URL of the site and any other information needed to connect to the site, and we will write a Site Definition File that will allow connecting to the site and interpreting its data. This file will be available to all the users of QuoteTracker immediately through the WebUpdate feature.

NOTE: Please do not submit sites for US quotes that do not offer UNLIMITED Real-Time quotes.

My broker is not in the list for Integrated Trading.  How do I add it?

For trading, brokers have to be specifically configured and integrated by us.  If it is not in the list, it has not yet been configured to work with the program and it can not be added by the user.  To add a broker, we would need the broker's support and cooperation.

How do I see live Intraday Charts?

Double-click on a symbol and the chart will show up. Right-clicking on each live chart will allow you to change its parameters. You can have many charts open at the same time.  You can also double-click on an index in the Indices panel to bring up a chart for the index.

What do all the technical indicators mean?

QuoteTracker uses standard market indicators.  Links to sources on the web that describe these can be found in the Intraday Charts section.

How do I remove symbols from the WatchList or add to it?

The drop down list on the WatchList contains the history of the stocks that you have previously entered and is not intended to be edited.  It is similar to the URL History in your browser - for  quick access to a previously used list.  Only the topmost list you select is active.  In the text box you can edit, remove and add to the symbols and pressing ENTER or TAB to activate it.  QuoteTracker will remember the last 10 entries and will automatically remove the oldest to make room for new ones.

What is the quickest way to get to the features and options in QuoteTracker?

Use the right-click of your mouse.  A right click on a symbol, an index in the Indices Panel, an Intraday or Historical Chart and the Ticker Tape will pop up a menu with all the features available for the symbol and options specific to the area you are working in.

I want to copy or backup my portfolios and settings. What do I do?

These are the data files located in the QuoteTracker folder:

PORT.XML

All the portfolios.

ALERTS.DAT

Stock alerts.

CHARTS.INI

Chart settings and defaults.

CHLINES.DAT

Trend lines and other objects drawn on the charts.

STOCKS.INI

Contains the WatchList and all your settings, including connection settings.

PAINTBARS.XML

Chart paintbar definitions.

HOLIDAYS.XML

Defined excluded holidays that will not be shown on the intraday charts.

ADAL_CUSTOM.XML

Custom scans for the Advanced EOD Scanner.

*.SLT files

Contains a stored layout. These files may be located in folders other than the regular QuoteTracker install.

If you also want to copy the intraday data and news gathered on the stocks, then you

need to copy the following from the QuoteTracker Cache sub-folder (but note that these files may be fairly large in size):

SDATA.DMP        Intraday quotes data.

SNEWS.DMP        News (headlines).

This process can also be automated by the Backup and Restore functions available within QuoteTracker.

Other files that may be used by QuoteTracker:

*.PEX files

Exported portfolios that can be shared and imported into QuoteTracker.

*.CHT files

Exported chart templates that can be shared and imported into QuoteTracker.

*.GIF and *.PNG files

Snapshot picture files of intraday and historical charts as set in Preferences.

How do I export data from QuoteTracker?

QuoteTracker has export options on the Intraday Charts, built-in API servers and from the Raw Data screen.

I downloaded a new program version through WebUpdate. It looks the same!

One of the nice things about the program is that even when it is enhanced with new features, the basic interface remains the same.  If the program you updated to is a released production version (identified by a version number in the form of X.X.Y, where is X.X is the major version and Y is the minor version), you can see a list of revisions at our website or by selecting Version Changes from the Help Menu in the program.  If you downloaded a beta version (usually identified by a version number in the form of X.X.Y.a, where .a is the letter of the Beta version), you can view the list of changes or features on our website beta section.

The program tells me I am blocking the ads and then exits.  What can I do?

We do not care if you block ads in general. Just don't block ours. We do have to make a living.  You can make it so our ads are allowed through, while other ads are blocked. The steps to do that are different depending on the software that you use to block ads.  Details can be found at http://www.quotetracker.com/faq.shtml#adblocking.

I get a C++ Runtime error: R6025 - pure virtual function call. How can I fix it?

The error is not actually caused in QuoteTracker.  QuoteTracker is written in Delphi where as the error is a C++ error.  The only things we use that are written in C++ are the Internet Explorer components and standard Windows components.  One of the other programs installed on your computer is tying into IE improperly or is improperly uninstalled.  QT uses IE components, and when it calls one of them, IE tries to access the hook for this other software and fails.  That is where this error is coming from.

The most likely culprit is VirtualKey.  It is frequently installed on computers without the users even realizing it, particularly if you use CompuServe.  Go to Add/Remove Programs Control Panel and check if you have it there. If so, uninstall it.  If you do not have VirtualKey and are getting the error, please email us and let us know if you using Norton Anti-Virus, AVG Anti-Virus or some other anti-virus program (which?),  Norton CrashGuard, NetMedic, Pezdownload, or some other software that monitors the net traffic?  We are trying to narrow down the source of the problem. So far, these culprits are our best guess.  Also, let us know if you have or ever had anything from CompuServe installed on your computer.

I have another question/problem or want to make a suggestion or comment.
