Watch List

Print this Topic  Top of Page  Introduction

The WatchList is just another window (portfolio) in which you can track stocks.  This screen gives you the ability to get quick quotes on stocks without having to add them to portfolios first.  You can access this window from the Tools menu, the Menu button, or selecting it by right clicking on your main portfolio.

Clicking on the pushpin will link the window to the selected color group.

You can type the stocks into the text box on top of the WatchList (separated by spaces or commas).  You can also use the separator symbol --- as in a regular portfolio to group the symbols.  Once you press the ENTER key, the symbols will appear in the watchlist.  Drag and drop symbols in the watchlist to rearrange the order of the symbols.

Create a new list or change the symbols, by typing over them in the text box.  Use the Backspace or Delete key to remove a symbol. Press ENTER to activate the new list.

Symbols can also be deleted (Shift+Del) and new symbols added (Insert) from the right click menu on the WatchList. Adding and deleting symbols in this way may be easier than editing the current list text box which will update accordingly. The following dialog appears to allow you to type the symbols to add:

Click the Add button to activate the new symbols.

Note: When adding symbols that contain spaces or commas in the list text box or the Add Symbol(s) dialog, enclose the symbol with single quotes so that the space or comma is not seen as a new symbol, such as 'ABC DE'. or 'MSFT,Q'

Note: The bottom area can be used to add TD AMERITRADE Option symbols, by clicking on the Option Chain button, which will bring up an option chain window where you can select the option you wish to add

The drop down List on the WatchList (WatchList History) contains the list of stocks that you have previously entered and is not intended to be edited.  It is similar to the URL History in your browser - for  quick access to a previously used list.  Only the topmost list you select is active.  In the text box you can edit, remove and add to the symbols and pressing ENTER to activate it.  QuoteTracker will remember the last 10 entries and will automatically remove the oldest to make room for new ones.

The Watchlist runs independently of the portfolios - the Site selection and columns - Edit Views (from the View menu) may be different than the ones selected for your portfolios.  The auto-refresh interval (secs.) on the Watchlist, if you are using a refresh (non streaming) site, may be different than the portfolio settings, as well.

Since the WatchList tracks individual stocks as opposed to portfolios, portfolio specific columns are not applicable.  For example, you will not find the PAID, SHARES and GAIN columns.

You can create a new portfolio from the current watch list that will then be available to you on the main screen. Do this by clicking the Make Portfolio button.  This dialog appears to allow you to enter a name for the new portfolio.  After you create the portfolio, you can go to the Edit Portfolio screen to enter portfolio specific information.

The WatchList can be made to stay on top of all other windows by setting this option on the Misc. tab in Preferences.  QuoteTracker remembers (and will restore) the position and state (open or closed) of the WatchList from session to session.
