What's the advantage of using QuoteTracker over just going to the Web sites? Back to Top

With QuoteTracker, you only have to enter the portfolio once, regardless of what site you decide to get quotes from. QuoteTracker will automatically get the quotes for you - even if the site you select does not support streaming quotes. QuoteTracker uses the quotes to provide you with streaming intraday charts, alerts, news monitoring, research, Option Chains and lots of other features all at your fingertips.
If I use a brokerage account as a source for quotes, is my password secure? Back to Top

Yes. QuoteTracker uses the same encryption (SSL) to communicate with the brokerage site as do the regular browsers such as Netscape Communicator and Microsoft Internet Explorer. In fact, QuoteTracker uses the same components for TCP/IP communication as MS IE.
If you check the "Save Password" check box, your password is stored on your hard drive in an encrypted form so even if someone finds it, they will not be able to read it.
QuoteTracker only uses the password to login to the requested site. The password is never transmitted to any other site. This can be easily verified by using proxy logging or packet sniffer software to monitor the TCP/IP transmissions.
I thought QT was free, but there is a registration. Is it free or not? Back to Top

QuoteTracker registration is required for use with US Brokers. For use with subscription sources as well as NON-US brokers and other web sites, either registered or non-registered version will work. The difference between registered and un-registered QuoteTracker is that the registered version does not have ads, can display up to 10 days of data on the intraday charts vs. 2 for the un-registered version, and removes the 6 month restriction on the dynamic historical charts. If you are okay with these limitations, then there is no need to register. If you would like to remove the ads from the main screen, you can do so by registering QuoteTracker.
QuoteTracker is free, FULLY REGISTERED for all TD AMERITRADE Accounts funded with $2,000 or more. Refer to TD AMERITRADE HELP PAGE for more details
All the real-time quote sites require a login. What site can I use for FREE Real-Time quotes? Back to Top

If you have an account with one of the sites listed in the QuoteTracker SITES dropdown list, you can select that site and enter the login info when prompted. Most brokers on our list provide real-time quotes for free to their clients. If you do not have a brokerage account with one of the sites, look for sites with "...(FREE w/Registration)" or "...(registration NOT Needed) in the SITES list for the exchanges you are interested in.

QuoteTracker also supports a number of reasonably priced subscription data feeds. Check the Quote Sources page for more details.
Can I get quotes and charts on Futures through QuoteTracker? Back to Top

QuoteTracker can chart any symbol that it can get a quote for. Most subscription data sources as well as a number of brokerages do support futures.

Check the Quote Sources page for the most up to date list.

Trading futures involves substantial risks and is not suitable for all investors.
What if the website from which you're getting data changes its format? Back to Top

These sites change formats frequently. That is why we made the program as flexible as possible in interpreting data from the sites. If we notice (or we're notified by you) that a site changed its format to the point of QuoteTracker failing to interpret its data, we will change the site's "Site Definition File" and place it on our Web site. Every user of QuoteTracker will then be able to get the update file using our "WebUpdate" feature - by clicking on the WebUpdate button in the OPTIONS dialog box.
What is the "Press to Link" pin button on the charts and other QuoteTracker windows? Back to Top

When clicked, that window is linked to the symbol last selected on the portfolio or WatchList screen. As you click on various symbols, all linked windows automatically switch to the last clicked symbol. If you want to be able to click anywhere on the stock row instead of just the symbol column, hold down the SHIFT key.
How do I see live INTRADAY CHARTS? Back to Top

Double-click on the stock row in the table and the chart will show up. Right-clicking on each live chart will allow you to change its parameters. You can have many charts open at the same time.
How do I see HISTORICAL CHARTS? Back to Top

Right-click on the stock row in the table and pick the "Historical Charts" option from the menu that pops up. The historical charts work the same way as the Intraday charts except for End of Day timeframes vs intraday timeframes
I can only get Historical Charts for US stocks. How do I get charts for other exchanges? Back to Top

Right-click on the stock row in the table and pick the "Historical Charts" option from the menu that pops up. If using BigCharts as the Historical Backfill source, then in most cases, QuoteTracker is setup to automatically handle the symbol conversion. If not, you can right click on the chart and select BACKFILL AS... and enter the symbol in EX:SYMBOL format for BigCharts, where EX is one of the following exchange prefixes:

       AU - Australia
       CA - Canada
       UK - United Kingdom
       FR - France
       HK - Hong Kong
       DE - Germany
       JP - Japan
       NL - Netherlands
       NZ - New Zealand
       NO - Norway
       ZA - South Africa
       IT - Italy
       ES - Spain
       SE - Sweden
       CH - Switzerland

For other symbol types such as options, Indices, Mutual Funds, etc, please check the BigCharts symbol lookup page

International investments involve special risks, including currency fluctuations and political and economic instability.
How do I remove symbols from the WATCHLIST or add to it without creating a new one? Back to Top

The drop down list on the WatchList contains the history of the stocks that you have previously entered and is not intended to be edited. It is similar to the URL History in your browser - for quick access to a previously used list. QuoteTracker will remember the last 10 entries and will automatically remove the oldest to make room for new ones. Only the topmost list you select is active. In the text box you can edit, remove and add to the symbols and pressing ENTER to activate it.
What do all the technical indicators mean? Back to Top

QuoteTracker uses standard Market indicators. The description of the indicators on the intraday charts can be found on our help page.
When I refresh, the outline around the button turns red. What do I do? Back to Top

Right-click on the "Refresh" button - you will see options to see last fetched data for quotes (that's the first option), indices and fundamental data. Pick the first option - see what it says. If the page that shows up does not explain things, email it to us and we will try to see what's wrong.
When I run, index data or fundamental (avg. volume, 52 week high/low etc) does not show up. Why? Back to Top

If you are tracking securities other than US Stocks, then the columns in question will only show info if the data source you selected provides data for those columns. If you are having problems with those columns for US stocks, then please check your computer's time and time zone setting (double-click on the system time shown in the lower right corner of the "Start" bar). If that is okay, try doing a "WebUpdate" (OPTIONS/WebUpdate menu). If that does not fix things, look at the pages being fetched using the method in the previous question. If you still do not know the cause of the problem, please Send us an email
I want to copy or backup my portfolios and settings. What do I do? Back to Top

You can copy the QuoteTracker user files using QuoteTracker built in backup/restore facility. Do the following:
    • Select FILE/Backup Settings menu in QuoteTracker on the original computer
    • Check the "User Files" and "Layouts" checkboxs
    • Click on the "Backup The Files Above Right Now" button and specify where you would like the backup file stored, then click the SAVE button
    • Transfer the newly saved backup file to the Target computer, where you want the settings to be copied to
    • Install QuoteTracker on the Target computer if it is not already there, and start it
    • Select FILE/Restore Backups menu in QuoteTracker on the Target computer
    • On top of the window, slect "Restore from File" and specify the location of the backup file that you want to restore from (the file you transfered from the other computer)
    • Click on the SELECT ALL button on the bottom of the screen and click on START RESTORE

Alternately, you can also do this manually by copying the following files from the QuoteTracker directory:
PORT.XML - Contains all the portfolios
ALERTS.DAT - All the stock alerts
      CHARTS.INI - All Chart Settings
CHLINES.DAT - Stored trendlines drawn on intraday charts
STOCKS.INI - Contains the WatchList stocks and all the other settings
PAINTBARS.XML - Contains the Chart PaintBar definitions (QT versions 3.5.0D and above)
HOLIDAYS.XML - Contains the holiday definitions so QT will know not to show blank days on charts (QT versions 3.4.1C and above)
~CURLAYOUT.SLT - Last layout saved when QT closes (and used to restore QuoteTracker layout on startup)
*.SLT - Each file with .SLT extension contains one stored layout for QT. NOTE: These files may be located in folders other than the regular QuoteTracker install. (QT versions 3.7.8D and above)
I get C++ Runtime error: R6025 - pure virtual function call. How can I fix it? Back to Top

The error is not actually caused in QuoteTracker. QuoteTracker is written in Delphi where as the error is a C++ error. The only things we use that are written in C++ are the Internet Explorer components and standard Windows components. One of the other programs installed on your computer is tying into IE improperly or is improperly uninstalled. QT uses IE components, and when it calls one of them, IE tries to access the hook for this other software and fails. That is probably why you are getting this error.

The most likely culprit is VirtualKey. It is frequently installed on computers without the users even realizing it, particularly if you use CompuServe. Go to Add/Remove Programs Control Panel and check if you have it there. If so, uninstall it.

If you don't have VirtualKey and are getting the error, please email us and let us know if you using Norton Anti-Virus, AVG Anti-Virus or some other anti-virus program (which?), Norton CrashGuard, NetMedic, Pezdownload, or some other software that monitors the net traffic? So far, these programs are mostly the source of these errors. In addition, we have noticed that computers that have had CompuServe installed at one point may also experience issues.
I get a DIBENG.DLL error whenever I start QuoteTracker. How can I fix it? Back to Top

According to Microsoft, this indicates an incompatible display/graphics driver is installed on your system. Go to the manufacturer's website and check for updates for the model number and your version of Windows.
You can verify this is the cause by lowering the color depth on your display in Windows Control Panel/Display on the Settings tab.
You respond to my email right away even if I sent it in the middle of the night. Do you ever sleep? Back to Top

    NO
I have a question that is not answered above. Back to Top

Send us an email and we will answer it (and may add it to this FAQ).
NOTE: Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 or higher has to be installed. If your Windows version has IE built in (Windows 98 or higher), then this is not an issue. Otherwise, if you do not have IE installed or have an older version installed, please install the latest version of IE. You DO NOT have to have IE set to be the default browser and you do NOT have to have IE running to use QuoteTracker. You just need it to be installed on your computer, and properly functioning.
